Neighbourhood Centres

One of the greatest contribution of the organization to the overall development of persons with disabilities, especially children with disabilities, as well as bringing actual change in the attitude and behavior of nondisabled persons regarding the issues of persons with disabilities has been the promotion and nurturing of Neighborhood Centre. Initially one center was set up in Gundumal Village of Kosgi Mandal and replicated over a period of time in the other 4 Mandals of Bommaraspet, Darrur Gattu and Maldakal. In the last 4 years, the Neighborhood Centres were set up in the other 3 Mandals of Doulatabad, Balanagar and Maddur, with the financial support of Government which sanctioned a grant of Rs.150,000/- for each Mandal. As a result of this intervention, around 150 to 160 children with disabilities are availing the various services offered at the Centres in all the 8 Mandals every day.

This innovative approach was studied by the government of Andhra Pradesh and replicated in disability programs across the state in both rural and urban settings.

The services being offered at the Centres include:
  • Activities of Daily Living Skills
  • Physiotherapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Motivation services like
✓ Motivating parents to send their children to school
✓ Motivating parents to take their children to hospitals

Besides, these centers serve as venue for regular meetings of the village level DPO infusing a sense of ownership of the Centres and as Resource and information center for all the necessary and relevant information for persons with disabilities:Given below is the breakup of the distribution of aids and appliances to persons with disabilities and those who have accessed correctional surgery:
